Zakaria Vial is an illustrator, designer and architect based in Brighton. He is the creator and painter of ZAKA, a sustainable hand-painted second-hand garment project.
ZAKA is all about curating unique styles for unique people, by selecting second-hand vintage clothing and painting one of a kind designs on each piece.
The fashion industry is one of the 5 most polluting industries in the world. It doesn't make sense anymore to buy new clothes when there are so many beautiful pieces out there to enjoy - they just need a bit of attention. Painting onto second-hand clothes is a way of transforming them into completely new objects. I truly believe that reusing is the new fashion!
Our garments go through very little transformation. They are simply cleaned, hand-painted, and heat-fixed. I use high-quality washable fabric paint, in reasonable amounts. Each item is created by myself. Nothing is mass produced, and everything is painted by hand, from my small studio in sunny Brighton.
It is also the story of a painter looking for moving canvas.
